Application and advantages of moxidectin in pig farm

In the Golden Pig Era, Ensuring Pig Herd Health Means Guaranteeing Ultimate Profits.

Parasitic diseases, the “shadow killer” of pig farm efficiency, not only impact production benefits but also directly affect the pig herd’s immune system, causing immunosuppression, reducing resistance, and consequently easily inducing other diseases. Currently, it is a crucial time for deworming on pig farms. How can you ensure safe and efficient deworming work?

deworming drugs used in pig farms

Currently, there are five main categories of common deworming drugs used in pig farms:

01. -Midazole Compounds

Synthetic contact ectoparasiticides. The representative drug is Coumaphos (双甲眯). They primarily target external parasites and are short-acting products.

02. Organophosphates

Low-toxicity organophosphates, primarily used for killing external parasites. Common examples include Trichlorfon (敌百虫), Dichlorvos (敌敌畏), and Phoxim (辛硫磷).

03. Macrocyclic Lactones

Including Avermectin, Ivermectin, Doramectin, and Moxidectin. This class of drugs is widely used and is the mainstream product for deworming on pig farms.

04. Imidazothiazoles

Including Levamisole and Thiabendazole, with Levamisole being the most widely used. Currently, due to a narrow safety margin, and only effective against internal parasites, they are rarely used on pig farms.

05. Benzimidazoles

Low-toxicity dewormers, with Albendazole and Fenbendazole being the most widely used. They have poor efficacy against external parasites and are mostly administered through feed mixing.

The national regulations clearly state that the addition of drugs to feed will be gradually prohibited this year. Common drug administration methods on pig farms, such as feed mixing, have drawbacks like uneven mixing. Pig farms urgently need a product that requires fewer administrations, is easy to operate, and is effective. Below, we introduce a new type of deworming product – 0.5% Moxidectin Pour-On Solution – to help prevent African Swine Fever recovery and create a healthy pig herd.

Application and Main Advantages of Moxidectin in Animal Deworming

Moxidectin

Moxidectin, also known as Moxydectin, Moxidetin, Moxidectine, English name Moxidectin. It is a novel antiparasitic drug, belonging to the third generation of Avermectin drugs. It is a semi-synthetic and single-component macrocyclic lactone drug produced by Streptomyces fermentation.

Moxidectin differs from other macrocyclic lactone antiparasitic drugs in that it is: single-component, safer, long-lasting and highly effective, and has higher deworming activity. Extremely low doses of Moxidectin have strong activity against nematodes and arthropods.

Moxidectin has the following characteristics:

01. High Safety

The pour-on solution for external use avoids degradation by gastrointestinal digestive fluids. Moxidectin’s high fat solubility allows it to be stored in fat and released at a constant rate. Moxidectin is not easily transported by P-glycoprotein (PGP) in mammals, while the toxicity of other avermectin drugs to mammals is mostly related to PGP.

02. Transdermal Absorption

The application of innovative transdermal absorption enhancers dissolves sebum in the sebaceous gland ducts, which in turn affects the hydration of the stratum corneum of the skin, changes the arrangement of stratum corneum cells, expands the openings of sweat glands and hair follicles, forming drug channels, and ultimately the drug diffuses into the capillaries.

03. Dual Action: Internal and External Parasite Control

It has good efficacy against common internal parasites such as: roundworms, nodular worms, swine whipworms, lungworms, etc. It also has very ideal efficacy against external parasites such as: mange mites, lice, fleas, etc.

04. High Efficiency

After use, scratching is significantly reduced within 3 days. Pig ears severely infected with mange mites gradually dry out and lighten in color. The scratching index reaches below 0.1 within 7 days. In 14 days, the deworming effect against internal parasites such as roundworms, whipworms, lungworms, and esophageal worms reaches 98% (reported by Stewart et al. research).

05. Long-lasting Effect

After Moxidectin administration, the reappearance time of internal parasite eggs is 84 days, while Ivermectin shows egg shedding as early as day 42 (confirmed by research from Dl Pietro et al.). The reappearance time of mites after Moxidectin administration can be as long as 112 days (confirmed by research from O’Brien et al.).

06. Precise and Convenient

Pouring the solution on the back of each pig achieves precise administration. Dedicated pour-on equipment is convenient and quick, making deworming easy.
